A US gallon is 3.785 litres. A UK imperial gallon is 4.546 litres — about 20% larger. The same applies to pints and fluid ounces: a US pint is 473 mL while a UK pint is 568 mL. This difference matters when following international recipes or fuel efficiency ratings.

For water, 1 mL = 1 g. For other ingredients, the relationship depends on density. 1 cup of flour weighs about 120–130 g, while 1 cup of butter weighs about 227 g. This is why professional recipes often specify weight rather than volume — it is more precise and accounts for variation in how ingredients are packed.

A standard wine bottle holds 750 mL = 0.75 litres. A magnum is 1.5 L (two bottles). A jeroboam is 3 L (four bottles). Standard wine glass servings are typically 150 mL (5 fl oz), so a 750 mL bottle contains five standard glasses.
