One acre is 4,047 m² or approximately 0.4 hectares. Historically it was defined as the area a man could plough in one day. A standard American football field (including end zones) is about 1.32 acres. British country estates are often described in acres.

Divide square feet by 10.764 to get square metres. For example, a 1,500 sq ft apartment is 1,500 ÷ 10.764 ≈ 139.4 m². Alternatively, multiply square feet by 0.0929. For a quick estimate, divide by 10 and subtract 5% — close enough for most purposes.
