FAQs

What is the difference between BMR and TDEE?

BMR is the calories needed at complete rest. TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) multiplies BMR by an activity factor to estimate total daily calories burned including exercise and daily movement.

Which BMR formula is most accurate?

The Mifflin-St Jeor equation is considered the most accurate for most people according to clinical research. The older Harris-Benedict equation tends to overestimate by about 5%. Neither accounts for body composition.

Does BMR change over time?

Yes. BMR typically decreases with age due to loss of muscle mass. It also decreases during prolonged calorie restriction as the body adapts. Resistance training helps preserve muscle mass and maintain a higher BMR.
